CHAPTER 5

KNOWLEDGE

Now that the roots are firmly in place, it is time to see how they actually secure the philosophical tree. This chapter is devoted to Descartes’ theory of knowledge and some of the issues arising from it. The main issues to be discussed will be why people make mistakes, how to avoid them, and how God’s existence and non-deceiving nature guarantee the truth of what is clearly and distinctly perceived. Moreover, Descartes’ proof of an external world is used as an illustration of how God’s guarantee works; and finally the claim that the reasoning of the Meditations does not really follow the geometrical order but is circular is examined.
